Patrick J. Melia has served as Placentia City Clerk since December 2002. He was first elected in November 2002 and re-elected in 2006 and 2010.

Patrick has been a resident of Placentia since September 1979. In January 1997, he retired from NASA with 38 years of federal service including 34 years with NASA. Before retiring he served as Probe Engineering Team Chief for Mission Operations on the Galileo Mission to Jupiter, a very successful mission. He received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Outstanding Engineering Merit Award from the Los Angeles Council of Engineers and Scientists.

Community Activities

Patrick Melia served on the Placentia Planning Commission for 12 years and on the Placentia 2000 Committee, Placentia Traffic Safety Commission, Placentia Advisory Committee on the Disabled and Neighborhood Watch Block Captain and District Leader. He has also served on the Morse Elementary School Technology Committee and as a JUSA Referee. He serves as Treasurer of the Southern California Chapter of the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology. He also served as Chairman of the Economic Development Committee, Placentia Chamber of Commerce, for 7 years.

Patrick has served as an Advocate for Handicapped/Developmental Disabilities Programs. He served on the Board of Directors, Regional Center of Orange County, for 6 years and on Area Board 11 of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities. He also was Chairman of the Community Advisory Committee, Northeast Orange County SELPA, PYLUSD.

Patrick is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he serves as a lector. He has served as Jubilee 2000 Coordinator, a member of FUTURE, on the Parish Advisory Board, Pastoral Council and a member of Disciples in Mission Team.

In February 1998, Patrick received an Executive Certificate in Volunteer Leadership from Chapman University. He became President and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Institute for Voluntary Leadership and became a Guest Instructor at Chapman University, UCI, and Orange Coast College.


Patrick has 4 children and 10 grandchildren. In December 2009 he lost his wife, Regina. They were married 42 years.
