The General Detective Bureau of the Placentia Police Department is currently made up of a lieutenant (supervisor), three detectives, and a civilian investigator. The general detectives are responsible for investigating crimes ranging from petty theft to homicide.

There are three separate branches of the General Detective Bureau, which include the Crimes Persons Unit, the Crimes Property Unit, and Miscellaneous Crimes.

Crimes Persons Unit
The Crimes Persons Unit (two detectives) investigates:
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Criminal threats
  • Exhibition of a firearm or deadly weapon
  • False impersonation of another person
  • Homicide
  • Kidnapping
  • Reckless discharge of firearms
  • Resisting arrest
  • Robbery

Crimes Property Unit
The Crimes Property Unit (one detective) investigates:
  • Arson
  • Auto burglary
  • Auto theft
  • Grand theft
  • Residential burglary
  • Petty theft
  • Prowling
  • Trespassing

Miscellaneous Crimes Unit
The Miscellaneous Crimes Unit (civilian investigator) investigates:
  • Child abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Forgery
  • Fraud
  • Misdemeanor assaults
  • Missing persons
  • Rape
  • Threatening phone calls
 
The civilian investigator is assisted by a domestic violence advocate that is available to assist victims of domestic violence in several different areas such as restraining orders, different referral information, and counseling.
