Councilmember Nelson first took office on the Placentia City Council in November of 2007, and has served as Mayor in 2008 and 2011. Highlights for the City during his tenure are:

  • Structural general fund deficit of $6,000,000 in 2007 to a current surplus of approximately $2,000,000
  • Securing of $4,500,000 for the OC Bridges project to relieve the rail congestion along the Orangethorpe corridor, and $20,000,000 for the downtown Metrolink Station
  • Reducing the Caltrans audit demand of $36,000,000 to the current amount of $4,000,000 and continuing the effort to make the City whole
  • Reduced wasteful spending
  • Renegotiated vendor contracts that have saved the City millions of dollars
  • Worked on pension reform
  • Increasing of transparency in City government
  • Crime reduction of almost 30%
  • Current project of re-surfacing almost 50% of the City’s residential roads and recently completed a city wide trimming of residential street trees. Working with tree committee to develop a master tree plan to save the City money on future work

Councilmember Nelson has served the City on the Planning Commission (vice-chair) from 2002-2004 and also on the Financial Audit Oversight Committee from 2006-2007.  He was elected chairman in 2007.

Councilmember Nelson sits on a number of committees and commissions representing the City, including:

  • Director, Orange County Sanitation District
  • President, OC Division, League of California Cities
  • State Director, OC Division, League of California Cities
  • Revenue and Tax Committee, State League
  • Chairman, Legislative Committee, Association of California Cities

Councilmember Nelson’s community involvement includes Chairman of the Board for Placentia-Linda Hospital, President-Elect of the Placentia Chamber of Commerce, former volunteer for the Homeless Intervention Shelter and Morse Elementary school. He is a past HOA board president and spent many years coaching youth sports. He is also a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Placentia.

The Councilmember has owned Nelson and Associates Insurance for 33 years.  His family and business have been in Placentia for the last 25 years.
